MADA – MAsonry DAtabase

Mechanical modelling of masonry is a key step of the seismic assessment of an existing masonry building. Realistic values according to available experimental data should be assigned to mechanical properties of masonry, in order to get reliable seismic capacity predictions for the structure to be assessed. This is a crucial issue especially in the case of historic constructions, because on site experimental tests for mechanical characterisation of masonry are often not allowed by national offices for cultural heritage preservation.
In the framework of ReLUIS-DPC 2005–2008 and 2010–2013 research projects, the Italian Network of Earthquake Engineering University Laboratories (ReLUIS) supported the development of a database on mechanical properties of masonry, to be used along with or instead of ranges provided by the Italian Building Code Commentary issued by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructures and Transportation in 2009 (Circolare 02.02.2009, n. 617 “Istruzioni per l’applicazione delle «Nuove Norme Tecniche per le Costruzioni» di cui al decreto ministeriale 14 gennaio 2008”).
The research group composed by Prof. Nicola Augenti (chair), Dr. Fulvio Parisi and Eng. Elia Acconcia developed MADA – MAsonry DAtabase, an online archive for computer-aided data selection of mechanical properties of masonry assemblages and their constituents (i.e., masonry units and mortar). MADA includes experimental data which were derived from more than 100 scientific publications and collected in more than 400 electronic files. Data can be selected through one or more keywords. Each file provides information on the scientific publication from which data were gathered (title, authors, original source), specimen, tests, measured and computed parameters, and (if any) diagrams and pictures.
MADA can freely be accessed online from the Design section of ReLUIS website. MADA’s contents and basic examples are provided in the tutorial, which can be downloaded from the website as pdf file.
To support a continuous updating of MADA, authors of experimental programs are invited to provide their own scientific papers or reports including data on mechanical properties of masonry assemblages. This work will help us to enlarge current data samples and to update/implement reliable ranges of masonry properties within national and international building codes.
