 RINTC - a joint ReLUIS-EUCENTRE research project to assess the (implicit) seismic risk of code conforming structures in Italy.
1. Project briefs

RINTC, which started in 2015, is a joint project of ReLUIS and EUCENTRE. The goal of the project is to assess in an explicit manner the seismic risk of structures designed according to the code currently enforced in Italy. To this aim five structural typologies were considered:

  • masonry buildings,
  • reinforced concrete buildings,
  • pre-cast reinforced concrete industrial buildings,
  • steel industrial buildings,
  • seismically isolated buildings.

In the framework of the project, multiple archetype structures have been designed for each typology according to standard practice at five sites across Italy, spanning a wide range of seismic hazard levels:

  • Milano,
  • Caltanissetta,
  • Roma,
  • Napoli,
  • L'Aquila.
The seismic vulnerability of the designed structures was assessed by subjecting 3D computer models to multi-stripe non-linear dynamic analysis. Integration of the probabilistic hazard and probabilistic vulnerability (i.e., fragility) yielded the annual failure rate, in terms of onset of non-structural damage and collapse, of each of the structures. Risk assessment takes into consideration record-to-record variability of non-structural response and, for selected cases, structural modeling uncertainty.

2. Project structure

The project is structured in seven work-packages, as follows:
  • WP1: Coordination, probabilistic hazard assessment, seismic input definiution for nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures, and evaluation of failure rates for the analyzed structures;
  • WP2: design, modeling, and non-linear dynamic analysis of masonry structures;
  • WP3: design, modeling, and non-linear dynamic analysis of pre-cast reinforced concrete structures;
  • WP4: design, modeling, and non-linear dynamic analysis of reinforced concrete structures;
  • WP5: design, modeling, and non-linear dynamic analysis of steel structures;
  • WP6: design, modeling, and non-linear dynamic analysis of base-isolated builginds;
  • WP7: design, modeling, and analysis of existing buildings (WP2 to WP6 refer to modern code buildings, which have been the focus of the 2015-2016 project. In 2017 an experimental activity related to the seismic risk low-code existing buildings in ongoing.)
  • EU: focus group on consideration of modeling uncertainty.
  • SLD: focus group on failure rates for damage-limitation limit state.
