This volume is dedicated to advanced investigation and diagnostic techniques applied to existing bridges, in line with the knowledge requirements established by the Guidelines. The text provides a comprehensive overview of the main non-destructive and semi-destructive methodologies currently available, systematically introducing ultrasonic tomography, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), radiography, tests based on Barkhausen magnetic noise, vacuum testing, stress-release testing, and techniques based on acoustic emission analysis. For each methodology, the physical principles, operational procedures, application potential, and limitations are presented, with continuous reference to real-world conditions encountered in bridges and viaducts in service.
