Starting on 28 November 2025, Tropical Cyclone Ditwah severely affected Sri Lanka, causing hundreds of casualties, impacting more than two million people, and inflicting extensive damage on infrastructure, housing, and essential services. The intense and persistent rainfall triggered widespread flooding and landslides across numerous districts, further worsening an already fragile situation and placing significant strain on transportation and water-supply systems.
In this context, an Italian mission composed of experts from the Italian Civil Protection Department, the Italian Red Cross, the ReLUIS Consortium, and the Ferrovie dello Stato Group arrived in Sri Lanka to provide technical support to local authorities. The intervention, activated within the framework of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism and coordinated by the Italian Civil Protection Department, foresees on-site inspections and technical assessments until 20 December 2025. These activities aim to analyse the cyclone’s impact on strategic infrastructure and to identify potential support and recovery actions in the short, medium, and long term.
